As night time falls, the main area of the nation’s capital city of Santo Domingo changes into a lively night market on most nights during the week. Whilst you don’t need to spend a single dime to enjoy the atmosphere, sights, sounds, and smells, you might want to pick up a few items to take home with you; haggle hard and you’ll find that the already reasonable prices drop a bit lower too! It’s also a fab place to have a bite to eat and savour the local delicacies for really cheap prices.

Soak up the Vibe of Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is a great place to explore during the day, as well as enjoying its chaotic and frenzied night markets. The main part of the city is home to some beautiful buildings, great for taking Instagram shots to make all your friends back at home jealous! The colonial zone boasts grand old architecture and interesting monuments. Don’t miss seeing Catedral Primada de America, famous for being the first cathedral in the New World. You can also see the ruins of the first hospital in the New World, Hospital San Nicolas de Bari.

There are street entertainers aplenty, who are sure to capture your attention and imagination. Head to the lush and lovely Jardin Botanico Nacional and admire the abundant plant species in a calming environment; admission costs less than 1 GBP! Entry to the interesting Museo de las Casas Reales is also super affordable.

Give in to the Temptation of the Beach

The lazy beach life is calling your name, and you really should heed its pull … after all, you’re in the Caribbean! Bury your head in a good book, soak up the sun, relax on the soft sands, build a sandcastle, join in with fun beach games, swim in the dazzlingly clear and warm waters of the sea, and let the waves of warm contentment wash all over you. A top tip is to take your own bottle of water and pick up some juicy and tasty fruit on the way to stop you heading into one of the cafes or restaurants. Although, if you did treat yourself a little, nobody would blame you!

Although the Dominican Republic is best known for its beaches, there are plenty of beautiful spots here you can enjoy a great day hiking in stunning scenery and surrounded by wildlife. Best of all? It usually doesn’t cost you anything (other than your transportation costs to get to and from your chosen destination). Places to try include Pico Isabel de Torres, Boca del Diablo, Saltos del Rio Jima, and Pico Duarte.
