Lively and eclectic Amsterdam is crammed with things to do. Even if you are trying to stick to a strict budget, or if funds are starting to run low, there are many great free things to do in Amsterdam. The capital of the Netherlands need not be an expensive trip. It is perfect for a long weekend, or perhaps even longer. When visiting this interesting city, be sure to check out these top free things to do in Amsterdam:


Through a door on Spui Square you will find the beautiful traditional courtyard that is called Begijnhof. It is a quiet and peaceful place, offering respite from the everyday hustle and bustle of the city. Within the courtyard there is a church and a small chapel. It was once home to religious women.

Browsing the different markets in Amsterdam is a great way to see a range of interesting local products as well as watching the lively market life.

Free Ferry Ride in Amsterdam

Various operators run ferry trips across the river. They depart from behind the Central Station, and are completely free. They allow you to see the city from the water and gain a different perspective. They stop at different places, so if you have a final destination in mind, check before you ride. Otherwise, hop on board and see where you end up!


This art gallery offers a small but impressive selection of portraits of the Dutch elite, both from the past and from more modern times. The faces gaze down upon visitors, some stern and some inviting.

Free Concerts in Amsterdam

On almost every day of the week it is possible to find a free jazz or classical performance. Check the local press for details. Some good places to start are the Royal Concertgebouw, with free concerts at lunchtimes on Wednesdays, the Muziektheater, which offers free shows at 12.30 on Tuesdays, the Sunday night jazz performances at the Badcuyp, and the Bimhuis, which has free shows at varying times.


Most of Amsterdam’s beautiful churches offer free entry. These include Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, Noorderkerk, Westerkerk, De Papegaai, and St Nicolaaskerk.

Parks and Gardens

Amsterdam is home to some pretty parks and gardens, all offering free entry.

There are various free activities within this large library. They include perusing a wide selection of books, weekly recitals, art exhibitions, things for kids, and, on occasions, concerts.

Walking Tour of Amsterdam

Take yourself out on a walk around the main streets of Amsterdam, and discover a wealth of great buildings and new things. Not only is walking free, but it is a great way to explore sections of the city that you would otherwise miss. Free maps are available. You could also try a cycling tour.
