Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, and is situated on the North Island. A visit need not cost a fortune though, with plenty of free things to do in Auckland. There is a choice of accommodation to suit all budgets, as well as a great culinary scene that reflects the many different ethnic groups that call Auckland home.
Some of the best free things to do in Auckland include:
Head to the Beach
Around Auckland you will find beaches that will please those who want to swim, as well as those that offer great surfing opportunities. The North Shore is one of the best places to find nice swimming beaches, and the beautiful West Coast beaches are great for surf enthusiasts. Alternatively, you can relax on the shores or take a scenic stroll.
Hike a Volcano
The area surrounding Auckland is really picturesque and pretty, and there are over 48 volcanic cones to choose between. Whilst you will need to pay the ferry crossing, if you want to get close to an active volcano, complete with ribbons of smoke and that distinctive smell of sulphur, go over to Whakaari Island. Alternatively, enjoy the incredible scenery and amazing views from Mount Eden, explore the tunnels running through North Head, or visit the famous One Tree Hill, although the tree is no longer standing.
Stroll Around the Harbours and Along the Waterfront
Dream away at Silo Marina as you admire, and envy, the huge and expensive luxury yachts. The viaduct is interesting, and the nearby Hilton Hotel was designed to look like a cruise ship. You can see the art work and enjoy a spot of fishing at Queens Wharf, and watch the fishing boats coming and going at the North Wharf.
Join a Class in the Wynard Quarter
In the Wynard Quarter there are various classes, demonstrations and workshops held, all of which are free to join. Try your hand at different skills, or do some active Ta Chi to shake the cobwebs away. There is a variety of sculptures to look at in the area.
Filled with a rich and colourful variety of plants and flowers, the Auckland Botanical Garden is a great place to enjoy nature in one handy place. There is also a gift shop and a café onsite. 🙂
Climb a Lighthouse
It is free to climb to the top of the old lighthouse on the stunning Awhitu Peninsula. From the top, you can enjoy incredible panoramic views of the surrounding natural and rugged beauty. Perhaps pack a picnic and spend the day exploring the charming and pretty area.
Marvel at Art in Auckland Art Gallery

There are over 800 pieces of fabulous art work contained within an impressive building. Guided tours are available, and the tours are also free, as well as admission.
