Free Things to do in San Diego

The USA’s San Diego has gorgeous stretches of beautiful beaches, great weather all throughout the year, nice scenery, and an abundance of activities for adults and children alike. Some fantastic news is that there are many free things to do in San Diego as a large number of things to see and do in the city cost absolutely nothing. That’s right – free, gratis, no charge! A stay in San Diego really does not need a lot of money.

Some of the top free things to do in San Diego include:


Relaxing on one of the wonderful beaches, basking in the sunshine, and having a swim in the ocean will set you back absolutely nothing. They are public beaches that have no access charges. A day on the beach is a fun and cost effective activity for everyone – solo travellers can relax, families can play, and couples can enjoy some romance.

Gaslamp Quarter

To soak up some history and see how San Diego was in the past, head to the Gaslamp Quarter. In the downtown area, it is easily accessible. Take a wander through the streets, passing by Victorian architecture. There are also several art galleries and speciality shops to have a quick look at.

Seaport Village

There are many things to see and do in the Seaport Village area, and it is a great place to spend a chilled out day. Admire the views of San Diego Bay, and watch the ships and yachts coming and going across the ocean. There are many shops, which make for good browsing. You can chill out in the gardens and see various forms of free entertainment.

Mount Laguna

Whilst travelling the one hour to the mountain will have a cost, once there you can enjoy the fabulous scenery and cooling mountain breezes for free. There are some excellent hiking opportunities, and you can set your pace to be as active or laid back as you like. Admire the superb views and make the most of the great outdoors.

Old Town

For more interesting history, head to the Old Town, where you can stroll amongst historic buildings. See the oldest schoolhouse in the area, the traditional blacksmith forge and shop, old stables, and fine old houses.

Torrey Pines State Reserve

The Torrey Pines State Reserve is a terrific place to see a wide variety of birds – it is a favourite for bird watching enthusiasts and nature lovers. You can see woodpeckers, swifts, wrentits, and more in their natural, unspoiled habitat.

Olympic Training Centre

Sports lovers will enjoy this free attraction in San Diego. Take a self guided tour around the complex and see the training tracks and fields, where the athletes stay when in training, and the Otay Lake Reservoir. There is a visitor centre that can provide more information and tips to make the most of your trip.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

The enormous and expansive park is one of the biggest state parks in the whole country. You can enjoy the spectacular natural splendour of the desert and, at certain times of the year, admire numerous colourful flowers.

    Great list of free things to do in San Diego. As a nature and activity buff I’d love to check out Mount Laguna.
