Keep the Costs Down: Free Things to Do in Dubai

One of the most enticing and popular destinations in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates’ city of Dubai is home to plentiful ways to have fun. Often seen as being an expensive destination, filled with glamour and glitz, there are a few ways that you can enjoy this thriving city for less than you may at first think. Try some of the free things to do in Dubai and you may be quite surprised at how little you spend in a day (discounting accommodation and food costs).

Along with the world’s tallest building and heaps of decadent and opulent shopping malls, Dubai also has glorious beaches, bustling souks, and a plethora of gleaming modern buildings.

Here are some of the best free things to do in Dubai:

See the Towering Burj Al Arab

Whilst you’ll need to shell out to go to the observation deck of the Burj Al Arab, seeing the world’s tallest building from the outside costs absolutely nothing. Towering over the city at a whopping height of 1,053 feet (almost 321 metres), it is one of Dubai’s must-sees.

Explore Dubai Mall

Dubai is brimming with gorgeous malls, with plenty of items to catch your eye, but the gleaming Dubai Mall is a definite favourite. Window shopping (and dreaming!) won’t cost a single cent, and you can admire the glorious interiors as you escape the heat and enjoy some air-conditioned comfort. You can also be captivated by an abundance of colourful fish and other aquatic life from the outside of the enormous Dubai Aquarium that is housed within the mall.

Wander through the Souks

Dubai has a number of souks that let you enter a different world and experience a taste of the Arabia of yesteryear. Inhale the aromatic aromas of fragrant spices, feast your eyes on shimmering gold, and see a number of traditional items and handicrafts.

Be Enchanted by the Dubai Fountain

Not your everyday run-of-the-mill fountain, the magnificent Dubai Fountain is definitely one-of-a-kind. A massive crowd-puller, you can stand and stare at the almost-hypnotic evening shows without reaching into your wallet, pocket, or purse. The free shows incorporate water, lights, and music. The large man-made lake in front of the Dubai Mall is in itself really quite impressive.

Chill Out on Mamzar Beach

If you want to relax and enjoy the seaside when in Dubai, don’t fork out for one of the private beaches when you have great spots like Mamzar Beach to enjoy! You should dress more conservatively here, and respect the local Islamic culture, but it’s still a great spot to soak up some sun, laze on the sand, swim in the cooling waters of the sea, and enjoy the scenic views. With white sands and blue waters, what more could you want?!

Uncover the Past at Jumeirah Archaeological Site

Although you will need to arrange your admission in advance, visiting Jumeirah Archaeological Site doesn’t cost anything. A popular place with tourists, it’s a fabulous place for taking a peek in the Dubai of old. With historical ruins and locally-discovered artefacts, learn more about Dubai from times gone by.

Other free things to do in Dubai include visiting the camel races, heading to Meydan Racecourse to watch horse racing, escaping the hustle and bustle of city life and touring the tranquil Hatta Village, seeing the distinctive sails of the Burj Khalifa, admiring art in the Majilis Gallery, and passing some pleasant hours in the free museums around Al Fahidi Historical District.
